Operation Backpack Program Description:
A new school year is a time of excitement, but for some families it can also be a source of stress. School supplies, backpacks and new clothes (or bigger shoes) can strain already tight finances, particularly for families with more than one child. Sometimes school supplies are last on the list when you have to pay the rent or the electric bill. Often, children who do not have the proper school supplies are too ashamed to admit it and end up falling behind. Students cannot do their best if they do not have the right tools. Our goal is to highlight the importance of education as well as help students approach the beginning of the school year with a greater sense of confidence and hope.
Operation Backpack provides local children in need with a new, high quality backpack filled with grade-specific school supplies and a new, age-appropriate book. The benefit to the community is twofold: alleviating the financial burden for families by providing backpacks and school supplies, resulting in fewer teachers spending money out of their pockets to make sure their students are prepared for school. To date, over 1,115 Calvert County children have participated in the Operation Backpack program and we anticipate registering 300 students for the 2019/2020 school year.
